Doric Open

Several fencers travelled to Aberdeen to take part in the last Scottish Open of the season.

Chris Harding was the only fencer to win a medal in the main event. Chris won the Men's Epee trophy for the second year running, making this Christophers third victory in a Scottish open this season - he has already taken the Glasgow and Inverclyde gold medals.

Chris also lifted the Best School Pupil trophy, however this is one trophy he won't be able to defend next season!

Well done Chris!

Chris may have been our only medallist in the main competition but at the Doric they run a plate competition for those who are knocked out after the first round of the DE's and here our younger fencers had more success with Andrew Harding beating club mate Chris McCall in the men's epee final, Andrew Winter taking bronze and Steven Russell finished 5th. In men's sabre Neil McGibbon finished in the silver position behind Niall Murdoch of Dundee.

The main competition places of all WFFC fencers are shown below but thanks to the efforts of all our competitors WFFC finished in 6th place in the club listings - well done boys!

DOMESTIC RESULTS JUNE 2007

Gateshead International

Several of the girls travelled to Gateshead to take part in the International women's foil and epee competitions.

Although the fields in both events were small they were of high standards.

In the women's epee Ali Evans and Amy Duffus failed to make the cut after the poules.

Kirsty Thomson had rather a better day winning all her poule fights and coming out as second seed.

She then met Elizabeth Highton in the L16 and emerged victorious with a score of 15/13.

This then earned her a L8 fight against Anneka Lawrence which she won 15/12.

Into the L4 and a guaranteed medal!

A meeting with Elisa Albini ended Kirsty's winning streak 15/11.

However Kirsty will come home with both a bronze medal and some world ranking points.

In the women's foil event sister Natasha was not quite so fortunate although she did well in the poules and finished with a seeding of 3 with only 11 in the event Natasha met a Kazakhstan fencer who proved a little too strong on the day and Natasha went out in her first DE 15/8.

Cole Cup

Neil McGibbon travelled to Gateshead to take part in the Cole Cup an interntational satellite event carrying world ranking points.

Neil met the number 4 seed Peter Wright in the L32 and against the odds Neil prevailed with a 15/11 victory.

This then set Neil up with a L8 meeting with fellow Scot Harry Moncrieff. Unfortunately Harry's greater experience was telling and Neil lost 15/7 to finish 16th overall. Harry went on to win the silver medal.

Bill Hoskyns

Andrew Winter travelled to Stratford Upon Avon to take part in the adult nominated event for Cadet Men's epee. Andrew made the cut after the first round of poules but not the second.

INTERNATIONAL RESULTS MARCH 2007 * Updated 10/3/07

EUROPEAN CADET CHAMPIONSHIPS, Novi Sad, Serbia

The men's foil teams fenced on Saturday 10th March, the team consisted of Jamie Fitzgerald, Marcus Mepstead, Peter Barwell and Husayn Rosowsky.

In the last 16 the GB team were seeded 6th and beat Slovakia 45/42. In the last 8 the boys met the 2nd seeded Hungarian team but lost 44/37.

This then put them through to a fence off for the 5th to 8th places, they then met and were victorious against the Ukraine team 45/30. They then met the french team to fence for 5th place, in a close and exciting match Jamie pulled a stormer out of the bag to beat one frenchman 12/2 near the end of the match. Unfortunately it wasn't quite enough to secure victory and the boys lost 45/41 and finished 6th overall.

Jamie Fitzgerald fenced well in the poules winning 5/1 against Matthias Krammerstorfer of Austria, 5/0 against Romain Moizan of France, 5/3 against Jan Srna of the Czech Republic and losing two fights 5/1 and 5/3 against Tommaso Lari of Italy and Filiposs Nissim of Greece respectively.

This placed Jamie 31st after the poules, he then fenced 34th seed Jan Srna in the last 64 and unfortunately lost 15/14 in extra time. This gives Jamie an overall finish of  39th of 80.

The Edinburgh Open/Coup du Nord event consists of a domestic foil event for men and women and an FIE satellite event for men's and women's epee and sabre.

Held at Edinburgh University Sports complex at The Pleasance in Edinburgh on the 10th March Callum O'Donnell competed in men's foil, Ali Evans & Amy Duffus in women's epee and Neil McGibbon and David McGhie in men's sabre.

Women's Foil

Natasha Thomson competed in the women's foil event on Sunday 11th March.

Tash was third after the second round of poules.

In the semi final she met Scottish 5 Nations team mate Aillie McDerment and lost a close fight 15/10 to finish third.

Natasha Thomson - BRONZE medallist

Men's Epee

Chris Harding fenced well in the poules to achieve a ranking of 4th after the second round of poules.

He met Anton Pollard in the last 8 but unfortunately for Chris the experience of Anton allowed him to win a close fight 15/13, Chris will have a finishing place of 5th.

Men's Foil

There were 38 entries in the men's foil and a cut of 20% was made after the first round of poules.

Callum did well in the first round winning 3 fights of 5 and being seeded 10th.

The second round was seeded from the results of the first round and Callum was placed in a poule of 7 where he again won 3 fights, he was seeded 15th after this round of poules.

Callum then met Davis of Aberdeen City FC in his last 32 DE, he had previously met Davis in the 2nd round of poules where he won 5/0. He put his experience of his opponent to good use and won his first DE match 15/5.

This then put Callum through to the last 16 where he met two time British Champion (U17 and U18) and GB World Cadet team member

( 2002 - I think!). So a tough fight was expected and Callum fought very well but eventually lost 15/10 to finish 14th overall - no disgrace though as Brodie went on to win the competition 15/12 from England's Ben Peggs.

Women's Epee

There were 24 entrants in this competitions. Again two rounds of poules were held with the first round results being used to draw up the second with a 20% cut after round two.

Ali had a good first round poule winning 3 fights of 5 and being seeded 12th, Amy got off to a shakier start only winning one fight  but losing a couple very closely, she was seeded 20th after this round.

In the second round Amy again only won one fight but lost two 5/4 and one 5/3 however she survived the 20% cut and retained the 20th seed, Ali again won 3 fights and also lost one fight 5/4 and one 5/3 she also retained her first round seeding of 12th.

This then put the girls through to an incomplete last 32 tableau, Amy met fellow Scottish U16 Youth Team member Emma Byatt (13th seed) of EFC and in a nail biting match Amy prevailed to win 15/13.

Ali had a bye through this round straight into the last 16.

In the last 16 Amy then met Katherine Dolan and in a tough match which went onto the third period she lost 15/10 to finish in 16th place overall.

Ali met 5th seed Megan Lomas again in a tough match Ali managed to force her opponent to the final period of fencing before she was beaten by the more experienced Lomas 15/9. Lomas then went onto reach the final where she was beaten by Lui of HKG.

Men's Sabre

With an entry of 46 this competition followed the same format as previously described above.

Neil and David both fenced very well in their first round of poules winning 4 of 5 and 4 of 6 matches and gaining rankings of 11th and 14th respectively.

Neil didn't have such a good second round winning only 2 of 5 matches earning a ranking of 32 David again won 4 of 6 matches but with slightly less good indicators lost a placing to be seeded 15th.

Neil went onto his first DE 15/11 against Craig Watt, this then left him with the daunting prospect of Julian Nelis in the last 32, Nelis proved just too experienced for Neil this time round though and he lost 15/3 to finish in 31st position.

David had a bye through to the last 32 where he met Cei Beck who proved just a little too tough and in a close match beat David 15/10 on his way through to a final position of 8th place. David finished in 21st position.

QUEEN ANNE TEAM STORMS TO VICTORY - TWICE!!

Scott Davidson, Andrew Harding and Steven Russell travelled to Upper Heyford to take part in the British Schools Teams Championships.

There were 8 foil teams in the boys age group (U13) and 2 poules of 4 teams made up the first round. The boys were decisive in winning the poule 45/7, 45/4 and 45/24.

This took the boys into the semi finals which they won 45/3 against Warwick.

They then fenced in the final against Sussex House A winning 45/31.

On Sunday 4th March the boys took part in the epee tournament. There were 11 teams, round one was 2 poules of 4 teams and 1 poule of three teams.

The Queen Anne boys were in a poule of 4 which they won comfortably 45/6, 45/10 and 45/21.

This took the boys through to the quarter finals which they won 45/4.

The semi final was slightly tougher but the boys won 45/17.

The final was again slightly tougher but once again the boys were decisive in winning 45/19.

WELL DONE SCOTT, ANDREW AND STEVEN.
