GB SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007
The GB Senior Championships were held at the England Institue of Sport in Sheffield on Saturday 21st July.
The field in all weapons was strong with top fencers such as Jo Maynard, John Willis, Anna Bentley, Alex O'Connell, Louise Bond Williams & Richard Kruse in attendance.
Men's Foil
Jamie Fitzgerald produced the best result of the day. Jamie won all his fights in the poule and secured a bye into the last 64. This then saw Jamie up against youngster Pascal Delaney a small yet tricky opponent. Jamie won comfortably 15/8 to set up a meeting against Jamie Kenber. In a match that was exciting to watch Kenber gave Jamie a run for his money with Jamie playing catch up in the third period from 12/14 down. Jamie pulled back to emerge victorious with a score of 15/14 - Whew! This put Jamie into the medal positions of the last 8 where he went out to eventual silver medallist Lawrence Halstead 15/5 to finish 7th. Halstead went on to lose in the final to Scottish Olympian Richard Kruse.
Callum O'Donnell started well finishing the poule 3 up 3 down. This set him up for a 128 match with Mark Evans where the greater experience of his opponent proved too much and Callum went out 15/11 to finish 39th.
Casey Avril attended his first GB Senior Championships and although he fenced well in the poules he only had one victory and did not make the cut. Casey finished 88th.
Men's Epee
Chris Harding had a fantastic day in the biggest competition in terms of entries.
Chris started well in the poules winning??. He met fellow Scottish junior Joe Craig in the last 64 and in a clsoe match (15/13)he secured a match with verteran Robin Davenport. A comfortable victory here then gave Chris a draw against recent Heidenheim A Grade winner John Willis. Chris gave Willis his toughest match of the day taking more hits from him than the semi finalist. The eventual score was 15/11 but Willis was impressed by Chris's technique and piste presence and has marked him as someone to watch out for in the future.
Chris finished 13th overall.
Chris McCall despite two victories in his poule was unlucky to not make the cut and finished 90th.
Men's Sabre
Neil McGibbon did not have the best of days and with only on victory in his poule did not make the cut and finished 91st
Women's Foil
Natasha fenced well in the poule wining all her matches bar the one against Scottish Senior team mate Hannah Bryars.
Seeded 14th this secured her a bye into the last 32 and a match with fellow cadet Genevive Mullins who she dipatched 15/10.
This then gave her a much harder draw against one of the medal favourites3rd seeded left hander Claire Bennet. Claire's experience told and in a long match that went to the final period she beat Natasha 15/8 placing Natasha 14th.
This top 16 place at the Nationals has shot Natasha up the British cadet rankings where she is now lying in 2nd place.
Ruth Clarke fenced well in the poules finishing 3 up 3 down to have a seed of 33. She then met fellow Scottish junior Julia Blair in the last 64 and won comfortably 15/4. This then set her up to meet top 10 GB senior Martina Emmanuel in the last 32. Emmanuels greater experience won her through 15/6 and Ruth finished 27th overall. Emmanuel finished in second position behind current GB number 1 Scot Anna Bentley.
Women's Epee
Kirsty had a good poule losing only one match to Jo Beadsworth. This gave her a bye into last 32 where she met 26th seed Mary Cohen . In a very close match where the lead changed several times Kirsty was in the lead by 1 point with about a minute to go. Unfortunately Cohen equalized then went into the lead, Kirsty had no other choice but to go forward and try and score and lost the match 15-13. Mary Cohen went on to win the British Championships.
Kirsty finished in 18th place.
Ali also only lost one fight in her poule to GB top 10 senior Jo Maynard.
A bye to the last 64 saw her meet old adversary Katherine Gracey. Gracey in a reversal of their last four meetings beat Ali 15/14. Ali finished 35th overall.
Amy was not quite so succesful in the poule losing two matches. This then gave ger a last 64 match which she won. This then put her into the last 32 against junior Elizabeth Highton. Highton's greater experience and reach saw her win comfortably leaving Amy with a finishing position of 31st.
On Sunday Kirsty, Amy and Ali entered the team event and finished in 11th position.

Doric Open
Several fencers travelled to Aberdeen to take part in the last Scottish Open of the season.
Chris Harding was the only fencer to win a medal in the main event. Chris won the Men's Epee trophy for the second year running, making this Christophers third victory in a Scottish open this season - he has already taken the Glasgow and Inverclyde gold medals.
Chris also lifted the Best School Pupil trophy, however this is one trophy he won't be able to defend next season!
Well done Chris!
Chris may have been our only medallist in the main competition but at the Doric they run a plate competition for those who are knocked out after the first round of the DE's and here our younger fencers had more success with Andrew Harding beating club mate Chris McCall in the men's epee final, Andrew Winter taking bronze and Steven Russell finished 5th. In men's sabre Neil McGibbon finished in the silver position behind Niall Murdoch of Dundee.
The main competition places of all WFFC fencers are shown below but thanks to the efforts of all our competitors WFFC finished in 6th place in the club listings - well done boys!

Gateshead International
Several of the girls travelled to Gateshead to take part in the International women's foil and epee competitions.
Although the fields in both events were small they were of high standards.
In the women's epee Ali Evans and Amy Duffus failed to make the cut after the poules.
Kirsty Thomson had rather a better day winning all her poule fights and coming out as second seed.
She then met Elizabeth Highton in the L16 and emerged victorious with a score of 15/13.
This then earned her a L8 fight against Anneka Lawrence which she won 15/12.
Into the L4 and a guaranteed medal!
A meeting with Elisa Albini ended Kirsty's winning streak 15/11.
However Kirsty will come home with both a bronze medal and some world ranking points.

In the women's foil event sister Natasha was not quite so fortunate although she did well in the poules and finished with a seeding of 3 with only 11 in the event Natasha met a Kazakhstan fencer who proved a little too strong on the day and Natasha went out in her first DE 15/8.

|
Cole Cup
Neil McGibbon travelled to Gateshead to take part in the Cole Cup an interntational satellite event carrying world ranking points.
Neil met the number 4 seed Peter Wright in the L32 and against the odds Neil prevailed with a 15/11 victory.
This then set Neil up with a L8 meeting with fellow Scot Harry Moncrieff. Unfortunately Harry's greater experience was telling and Neil lost 15/7 to finish 16th overall. Harry went on to win the silver medal.

|
Bill Hoskyns
Andrew Winter travelled to Stratford Upon Avon to take part in the adult nominated event for Cadet Men's epee. Andrew made the cut after the first round of poules but not the second.

YOUTH SERIES ROUND FOUR
PLEASE NOTE THE DATE HAS CHANGED FROM THE ORGINAL PUBLISHED DATE TO THE 2nd AND 3rd OF JUNE 2007.
Entry form can be found HERE
The positions table for the Youth Series has been posted HERE after the third round of the series.
Congratulations to our “table toppers”
U12 Boys Foil Scott Brown, Iain Russell & Etienne Sadeghpoor 1, 2 & 3
Scott has won all three competitions so far so he will be the series winner no matter if Iain or Etienne or one of the Connors can stop his winning streak in round four.
U14 Boys Foil Andrew Harding, Casey Avril, Darren Brown & Scott Davidson 1,2 and joint 3 and following closely behind in 5th place Steven Russell. With only 4 points between the first and third place the series winner can’t be predicted so this should make for an exciting final round!
U14 Girls Foil Ruth Clarke and Ellie Coyle 1 & 2 and Zoe Sayers in 5th.
Ruth has won all three comps so far so she cannot be toppled from the number one spot but can she maintain the winning streak or can one of the others win round 4?
U14 Boys Epee – the whole competitions has only consisted of WFFC fencers so far so we occupy positions 1 to 7. However it is close at the top of the table and the eventual winner will be decided at round 4.
Andrew Harding, Scott Davidson, Jordan Euston and Iain Russell hold spots 1 to 4.
U14 Girls Epee Ellie Coyle 1 and Zoe Sayers 3. With only 5 points between 1st and 3rd place the competition is wide open and again will be decided at round 4.
U14 Girls Sabre Ruth Clarke 1.
Ruth is collecting titles this season she has a 27 point lead on her nearest rival and will collect the overall trophy – but can she win round 4 to make it a clean sweep?
U14 Boys Sabre Ruairi Mair, Darren Brown, Steven Russell 1, 2 & 3. Ruairi has a 26 point lead so will win the series title but Casey Avril won round three so can he Steven or Darren take the round 4 gold medal?
Looks like round four will be a very exciting competition although several of our fencers have sewn up overall titles some are still up for grabs - and will knowing they have won overall cause some of the competitors to relax and allow their rivals to win gold at round four??? Top spot is hard to get to but even harder to keep………….. watch this space for the final and exciting conclusion to the 2007 Youth Series.
