WFFC Celebrates 14th British Champion-NEW
Callum O'Donnell won the British U17 Men's Cadet Championship at Sheffield on the 5th October 2008 making him WFFC's 14th British Champion.

Callum's success comes on hot on the heels of the news that he has been selected as one of 5 winners of the Scottish Sports Aid Trust
Merit Award.
Callum was chosen from more than 150 young people in receipt of grants from the Scottish Sports Aid Trust each year they select 5 athletes to recieve their Merit Award.
Callum was to receive his award at the Scottish Commonwealth Games Council Annual Dinner in Glasgow on Saturday 25th October. Unfortunately, that is the weekend that he is in Germany fencing at Halle with the British Cadet Squad - we hope that his sister Niamh (Scottish Youth Series U12 Girls Foil Winner) will be able to collect the award on Callum's behalf!
WELL DONE CALLUM!
In addition to Callum's title WFFC fencers also achieved a further 3 last 8 places at the Championships.
We are very proud of all our fencers who competed.
Sorry to those of you for whom I don't have any photographs.

AWARD RECOGNITION FOR COACH KEN ROSE
Ken Rose was nominated for the Oustanding Individual Coach Award at the UK Schools Games - every one of the 1500 athletes taking part in the games was given the opportunity to nominate someone. Ken finished 3rd overall but for him it was enough that so many of the Scottish Team nominated him.
Ken (and lots of others) was also very pleased that his first coach Mike Westgate (the NI National Coach) was nominated for and won the Team Coach category.
Scottish Fencing announced on the Fencing Forum that Ken has recieved the Scottish Fencing Roger Crosnier Award for Coaching Achievement for the FOURTH YEAR RUNNING!
So well done to all the fencers who make Ken look so good and well done to Ken for his dedication and skill. |
START OF SEASON
Well, what a start to the season! After storming to victory at the UK Schools Games in three of the four team events that WFFCers were members of (see further down the page for the report) the older club members took all their enthusiasm and skills "Down South" to some of the largest and toughest events of the season and performed fabulously.
Ken and Lorraine covered two of the three events that fencers participated in and drove over 1000miles but it was worth it to see the athletes perform so well.
If anyone has any photographs of any of the fencing over the weekend and especially of the girls foil team at the UK Schools Games if they could send them to me by email or stick them on a disc and hend them in at the club it would be much appreciated. |
EPEE JUNIOR BSC SEPTEMBER 2008
The club was represented by Kirsty Thomson, Ali Evans, Amy Duffus and Andrew Winter at the new Junior BSC Epee event.
Girls Epee
Kirsty Thomson 14th
Ali Evans 13th
Amy Duffus 28th
This means Kirsty is in 8th position in the Junior ranking and Amy moves up to 7th and Ali up to 9th position in the cadet rankings.
Boys Epee
Andrew Winter 38th
This placing moves Andrew up to 25th in the cadet rankings.
|
HAMLET OPEN SEPTEMBER 2008
Neil McGibbon and Nicole Pickering represented the club at the Hamlet Open.
Neil McGibbon finished in 16th place as the highest placed Scot and moved himself up to 6th in the GB Junior rankings. This will ensure Neil is selected for the GB U20 squad.
Nicole Pickering started the season off well with a position of 46th and gaining a GB Junior ranking of 26th. Nicole has already been selected to represent GB at the first cadet foreign event of the season.
|
ESSEX OPEN SEPTEMBER 2008
Hot on the heels of the excellent Scottish results at the UK Schools Games Natasha Thomson, Ruth Clarke, Jamie Fitzgerald, Callum O'Donnell & Casey Avril all produced some fantastic results at the Essex Open.
Women's Foil
Natasha Thomson 10th
Ruth Clarke 53rd
Zoe Sayers 75th
These results will consolidate Natasha's ranking in the the top 5 of the Junior rankings and Ruth's place in the top 16 of the cadet rankings. This will mean both girls will be selected to represent Great Britain in the Junior and Cadet squads respectively.
Men's Foil
Jamie Fitzgerald 6th
Callum O'Donnell 12th (highest placed cadet)
Casey Avril 54th
These results will maintain Fitzgeralds position in the top 10 of the Junior rankings. O'Donnell moves up to 3rd place in the cadet rankings and chasing his clubmate Avril moves into 9th position. Again this means all the boys will be selected to represent Great Britain in their respective age group squads.

UK SCHOOLS GAMES AUGUST 2008
West Fife beat England at UK Schools Games!
NINE members of West Fife Fencing club were members of Scotland’s most successful ever UK Schools Games fencing team.
Club youngsters helped Scotland to five gold and three bronze medals in the “mini olympic” multi-sport event held in Bath and Bristol last weekend.
The outstanding performance of the weekend came from the Scottish boys’ foil team. All three competing members of the Scotland team were West Fife Fencing Club members and were up against the strongest England team in the three-year history of these games.

The England team of Hussayn Rosowsky (world cadet bronze medalist), Peter Barwell (silver medalist at the Halle international in Germany), Tom Hendrie (fifth ranked GB cadet) and reserve James Davis (winner of the Halle international and 15th at the world cadet championships) were overwhelming favourites to win the event.
The Scotland/West Fife team of Jamie Fitzgerald (22nd at world cadet champs and second at Cabries international), Callum O’Donnell (British under-16 champion), Casey Avril (British under-16 silver medalist) and reserve Alex Keel-Dwyer (Edinburgh Fencing Club) were considered rank outsiders by everyone except themselves and their coach, Ken Rose.
England won the first bout with Jamie Fitzgerald letting a 4-2 lead slip, losing 5-4 to Peter Barwell.
Then came the outstanding performance of the match with Casey Avril (15) taking on Hussayn Rosowsky (17), the current world under-17 bronze medalist.
Casey fenced superbly landing both attacks and ripostes to win the bout 6-2 and put Scotland 10-7 ahead.
Not to be outdone, Callum O’Donnell won the next bout against Tom Hendrie 5-2 to put Scotland 15-9 up.
Everyone expected an England comeback but the Scots had other ideas holding onto their lead throughout the match.
England tried bringing in their reserve but to no avail, the three West Fife fencers upped their game and held their nerve to win 45-42.
West Fife and Scotland coach Rose said, “The Scottish reserve was not needed for this match so West Fife Fencing Club can fairly claim to have beaten the whole of England.
“Apart from Jamie Fitzgerald our team is younger and far less experienced than their English opponents.
"Their performance was truly remarkable. They were helped by some fantastic support from the Scots in the audience, who almost blew the roof off when Jamie scored the winning hit. "I’m so proud of all three of them.”
Although the boys’ team foil gold was unexpected there were more gold and bronze medals won by West Fife members.
Natasha Thomson won the girls’ individual event despite carrying a leg and wrist injury. In a display of great control and composure, Thomson defeated England’s Grace Stafford 15-10 in the semi-final and Alex Craig by the same score in the final.
Thomson was the first non-English fencer to win an individual gold medal in the three-year history of the UK schools games.

Jamie Fitzgerald had hoped to match Thomson’s effort in the boys’ foil but had to be content with bronze when he lost by one point 14-13 to England’s Peter Barwell in the semi-final.
In the team events, Thomson and Ruth Clarke, also of West Fife, were members of the gold medal-winning Scottish team.
Thomson fenced even better than in the individual event winning all her six bouts scoring a total of 34 hits while conceding just 5. Clarke (two years younger than Thomson) also fenced very well, winning three, drawing two and losing just one bout.
West Fife members Amy Duffus and Ali Evans helped Scotland win another gold in the girls’ epee team event.

Once again their English opponents in the final were highly fancied to win, but the Scots showed great team spirit to maintain a narrow lead for most of the match to win 45-42.
Josh Johnston and Andrew Winter were also members of the Scottish team.

CLUB BBQ THIS WEEKEND SUNDAY 10th AUGUST
BBQ TIMES AND DIRECTIONS
Okay Folks, while there is still time to sign up for camping this Saturday (9th) and the BBQ this Sunday (10th) time is getting short as I need to work out how many tasty sausages and burgers & rolls to buy. If anyone has any special dietary requirements let me know and we will do our very best to cater for you.
So if you want to come and haven't let me know yet please do so by the 8th at lrsfwffc@aol.com thanks.
Okay Ken and I will be at the campsite from 6.30pm onwards on Saturday and there will be some cooking facilities available but you will need to bring your own supper and breakfast....................
The BBQ will start officially at 12pm but as we will have been camping the night before there will be people there all day so feel free to turn up anytime.
For those of you who haven't been before there are couple of large grassy areas for games to be played so please bring games equipment if you want. There is also a stream with a "pool" area where the youngsters can swim if they want so its wise to bring towels and some changes of clothes (socks at the very least!).
If you can, please bring a salad or pudding dish and drinks. The club will supply, burgers, sausages, rolls, marshmallows (its traditional to roast them over an open fire) some juice and water, cups, plates and cutlery.
How to find Nineacres ( I have a map which I can send as an attachment if you get in touch with me directly at lrsfwffc@aol.com)
By Road – North/South/East – Exit M90 Junction 6, for A977 Kincardine Bridge. Follow this road west for five miles until you reach the ’Crook of Devon’, at the village signpost turn first right, immediately after petrol station, driving past Fossoway Primary school. Follow road round to crossroads and take the campsite road/track on the left hand side. West - Depart at Kincardine Bridge and follow signs for Kinross (A977), continue west along this road for 16 miles until you reach the ’Crook of Devon’. Pass through the village and take the last turning on the left, driving past Fossoway Primary school. Follow this road round to crossroads and take the campsite road/track on the left hand side.
By Bus - A regular bus service between Kinross and Kincardine passes Fossoway Primary School road end, which is a 5 minute walk from the campsite.

CLUB RE-OPENS Monday 11th August, C U all then........
Dear All, The season has once again ended and we are indebted to all our fencers for being wonderful to work with, to parents for financial and emotional support and to all our helpers who make the club run as well as it does.
Check further down this page for more "NEW" items.
THANK YOU ALL
We also have to thank the club committee and many parent helpers for the fundraising Fayre which happened last weekend, they raised a total of £545 for the club, we hope this will got towards some new equipment for club members' use. Thank you to all involved for your efforts.
CLUB BBQ
Although the club is closed for the next few weeks (Thursday 3rd July through to Monday 11th August) there are still things to look forward to and the annual club BBQ has been provisionally booked at Nineacres Scout Campsite for the 10th August.
We have also made provision for camping to be available on the evening of Saturday the 9th. At present this is only a provisional booking so we need to know that there will be enough folks coming to make it happen. We appreciate many people will be on holiday at this time so if you can't come don't worry there will be other club events to join in with later in the season.
So if you can email Lorraine Rose at lrsfwffc@aol.com to let her know your family name and how many people you will bring to the BBQ and how many people would like to camp then you'll be informed as soon as the booking is firmed up or if the event is postponed. We are also going to need adults (over 18's) to help on the camping evening so if you want to spend a night under the stars to allow the youngsters a chance to have some fun then please do volunteer.
Lorraine would be REALLY grateful if you can let her know you are coming by the 23rd July.
CLUB RE-OPENS Monday 11th August, C U all then........

European Cadet Championships
Natasha Thomson and Jamie Fitzgerald have both been selected to fence in the GB team at the European Cadet Championships in Rovigo, Italy in March 2008.
Both fencers are now number 1 in their respective rankings and this should mean they will both be selected for the World Championships - well done!

British Youth Championships - FOIL
WOO PA PA!
WFFC celebrates it's most successful BYC Foil ever with two GOLD medals one SILVER medal and one last eight medal.
Natasha Thomson started the weekend off by returning the British U16 Girls Foil Champion's trophy which she won last season and she finished it by collecting the British U18 Girls Foil Champion's trophy. Natasha continued to show the same form that has seen her dominate the British cadet (U17) circuit beating two of Britain's top 15 juniors (U20) on her way to victory - Carolyn Benson of Wales in the semi finals and Catriona Sibert of England in the final.
This is Natasha's fourth British title and to round off her success she has been named as part of the GB team for the European Cadet Championships in Rovigo. Italy in March 2008, she has also been selected for the Scottish Senior Team for the annual 5 Nations Team event.
Natasha's success obviously inspired club mates Callum O'Donnell and Casey Avril who fought their way through some of the best U16's in Britain to set up an all WFFC final.
In the semi finals Callum fenced Alex Tofalides and Casey met Kareem Cheriton.
The final was close fought affair with both Casey and Callum leading at various points in the match but in the end Callum's experience advantage told and he won the match. However Casey can take consolation in the fact that he is young enough to enter the U16 event again next year.
In the U12 boys Iain Russell was the clubs only medallist picking up the 8th place medal and securing himself and automatic place in next years BYC finals.
All the other WFFC fencers were fantastic even though they didn't come home with medals.

A few requests; please make sure you enter competitions on time and please enter as WFFC - this is EXTREMELY important for those of you entering adult events. At the Bristol Open Natasha and Zoe also Callum and Jamie ended up in the same poule as they had entered under different combinations of the club name. When there is only one round of poules this can mean the difference between making the cut and not. The same thing has occured for entries to the Manchester Cadets but Lorraine has contacted the organisers in the hope that one club name can be used for all the fencers entered.
Please return borrowed kit by 6pm the following Monday so that it can be used by other club members, electric kit can be returned by 7pm. If you are not coming the the club that night then please make alternative arrangements for its return. If you can't manage this i.e you are fencing abroad and don't return until Monday evening then let us know so we know the kit will not be available to other club members.
VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS
Ken Rose has been awarded the Scottish Fencing Coaching Award for the third year running. This is a great recognition for Ken and his work with Scottish fencers we are delighted to see his efforts recognised by Scottish Fencing.
Natasha Thomson has moved to number one in the British U17 foil rankings after her 5th place at Bristol. She is also number five in the British Junior rankings.
Jamie Fitzgerald was number two in the British U17 foil rankings after Essex. He was also placed 6th in the British Junior rankings.
Kirsty Thomson is currently 5th in the British Junior epee rankings and Chris Harding is also 5th in the men's British Junior epee rankings.
Four fencers placed in the top 10 of the British rankings is a major achievement for the club, well done to everyone for helping to make this possible and lets hope that these fencers can all achieve their goals.
